The AI isn’t evil...

Of course the Mimir has an AI.  What self-respecting starship wouldn’t?  This game is, after all, based on 70s and 80s sci-fi.  Unlike HAL, this AI is not trying to kill you.  That’s not to say it necessarily has the same priorities as you.  Oxygen doesn’t mean as much to a computer as it does to a human.

Instead of trying to shoot you out of the nearest airlock, Mimir’s AI needs you.  You are a tool, the hands and feet for the AI’s obviously superior brain.  Just as you dispassionately pick up a welding torch to seal a hull breach, the AI will use you to secure it’s prime directive.

This puts the player in conflict with the AI.  It will help the player if you are doing what it needs.  It can also be ruthless if you don’t.  Finding a way to disable the AI might be a great approach, but you’ll be pretty blind without it.

As a system, the AI knows the status of all the ship systems and where all the crew rest, helpful objects lie  and even where the aliens roam.  The AI won’t lie, bit it also doesn’t have to tell the most helpful truth.

I’d love for the AI to be voiced, but I’m not sure I’ll get any voice actor volunteers.  I could possibly use some text to voice program, which might seem more realistic (but less personable).  I’d also love to enable voice response so the player can actually talk to the AI, either through a Unity system or Alexa.

“Shut the pod bay doors, Mimir...”
